Where Children Sleep

This book is definitely on my must read to my children list!

This girl's mother spends $1000 per month on clothing for her.

British photographer James Mollison was asked by the Save the Children fund to come up with an idea on promoting childrens rights. He remembered how much his bedroom meant to him, he thought that bedrooms reflect of lot of who we are, what we have and the circumstances we live in.

As Mollison concludes, “In the end, I hope the pictures and the stories in this book speak to children. Yes, so that lucky children (like I was) may better appreciate what they have. But more than that, I hope this book will help children think about inequality, within and between societies around the world, and perhaps start to figure out how, in their own lives, they may respond.”
Gives you food for thought...doesn't it?

Steampunk....have you heard of it?

What is Steampunk? According to Wikipedia, Steampunk is actually the term used to refer to fantasy and science fiction written in the Victorian age. A time when many machines were still steam powered. Now, if you were to describe a gadget as being “steampunk”, you’d be referring to a design integration of futuristic form with design elements and craftsmanship consistent with the Victorian era. To get an idea of what Steampunk looks like think Wild Wild West  and HG Wells Time Machine movies. Items are generally made with materials that include wood, copper, brass and iron
.I've always liked stuff that was a bit different and have now found a name for it.Check out some of my favourite steampunked stuff.....

Steampunk inspired jewellry.........

Steampunk inspired fashion.........
and it even takes over Ipods, computers, headphones ......

I love these Steampunked cartoons....

Star Wars rocks steampunked!

Houses can be steampunked too to see more about this check out thesteampunkhome.blogspot.com

If I had my own house and lots of money I too could be steampunked! LOL. but in the meantime is there such a thing as Farmerspunked....

Wordless Wednesday - Wheelbarrow Race

Each year in Carterton there is a Wheelbarrow Racing event held in March in tribute to the early settlers who wheelbarrowed trees over the Rimutakas to Carterton. Carterton Playcentre usually enter in the decorated wheel barrow section and this particular year we had Vicki in charge. Vicki has a very creative background and is a body artist amongst other things.
This is her vision - Queen and consorts from fantasy land.
Vicki in the red hair with her poor unsuspecting Auntie who came for a visit and got roped in!
Austin the willing child model!

I'm sure the judges of the race had no idea what they had struck but it did look awesome!

1 week rolled into one day

I have has such a busy week that I haven't had time to blog so I now have to put a whole week into one day.
What has kept me away from blogging? Meetings! I have had 4 meetings this week for Playcentre and Toy Library and now I have a to do list a mile long...type minutes and distribute, get started on grant applications for both toy library and Playcentre, compile databases for toy library, organise PR for toy library, book stall sites, run sessions, and the list goes on. My house is also in dire need of attention, the floor has resurfaced in the lounge with help from Ethan loading his toys on to his truck and transporting them back to his room but he has lost interest now damn!
those who know me well know housework is not my top priority, I'm sure Mum lied about my birthday cause Virgos are meant to be tidy and I am so not!

I want to share a recipe each Tuesday and since I missed Tuesday here is my next recipe from the Destitute Gourmet cook Sophie Gray.

Spiced apple cake
125gm butter melted (or marg is your budget is as tight as mine!)
2 unpeeled apples grated
1 cup of sugar
1 egg
1 and half cup flour
1tsp baking soda
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp salt

Topping
I don't always put this on, the kids tend to scrap it off and Neil complains its too crunchy for a dude with no teeth!
25gm butter
half a cup rolled oats
quarter cup brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon

Melt the butter, add apples, then sugar and egg and mix. Stir in dry ingredients (sift if you must) and mix to just dampen. Bake in shallow cake tin spreading topping over if you add it. (melt butter and add rest of ingredients to mix).
bake at 180c for 30 to 45 mins. Its really yummy with ice cream, or cream, or custard for dessert or all three if you must!

Here comes wordless Wednesday....origami that is just amazing!

Aren't they amazing! I struggle with paper planes...LOL.

We actually have plans this weekend too, we want to take the kids to the A and P show on Saturday providing its not raining. Ethan will love the animals and Western will like the wood chopping and we may be able to get them on a ride. Will take the camera.
Neil and I are going out to dinner sans kids for Aidan's 21st. It will be a real treat, Granny aka witchy poo is looking after the boys. Shes already planning to watch Tom and Jerry DVDs all night.
This Aidan before he grew his hair past his shoulders and got lots of piercings done!

Must go, Ethan is wanting to do baking so he can lick the big spoon before Western gets home from school LOL, it doesn't take them long to learn stuff like that.
